The Magnetic Fields
Distortion
Nonesuch Records

The Magnetic Fields are not, by any stretch of the imagination, newcomers to the music scene. It's been a little over seventeen years since they released their first album, Distant Plastic Trees, and they've since put out eight more stellar releases, including this year's Distortion. Stephen Merrit once again proves that he’s part of the indie rock royal family with soft, crooning lyrics about love, loss, and booze. It’s like a field guide to what mellow music should sound and feel like. Here’s some handy advice to any guys who happen to pick it: next time your best gal is pissed over some of your shenanigans, hand write her a note with thelyrics to “Too Drunk to Dream.” Now you're golden.
