The Tindersticks’ eighth studio album is a challenging but ultimately rewarding effort. The title track, “Falling Down A Mountain,” is a perfect example of this—it has a long, percussive intro and screeches of shaky trumpet that last several minutes before singer Stuart Staples’ warm and oft-mumbled voice turns the song into a grooving piece of music. Other tracks follow this formula, but songs like “Harmony Around My Table,” with its upbeat-repeating chords, make you appreciate the long wait.“Black Smoke,” the album’s single, is immediately likable but after several listens is the least memorable of the 10 songs. The vocals really shine on top of the simple-but-moving bass lines and tremolo guitars. If you can be patient you won’t be disappointed.
