For us East Coast residents who have long admired the work of San Francisco-based tattoo artist and painter Grime, we're lucky enough to get a rare opportunity to view his work in person. Grime's The Man In Black solo-exhibit of mixed media silhouetted self-portraits is currently running at Troy Denning's Invisible NYC gallery.
For his exhibition, Grime is showing new works that are more subtle and contemplative than his earlier, bolder and at times grotesque work. They seem to reflect a new stage in his life and creative thrust. Although his art pieces are not literal self-portraits, he plays with self-image – how he perceives himself as well as how he believes others perceive him – in his always striking, often disturbing work. It is not to be missed.
The Man In Black exhibit runs through March 25th, 2006, Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 8:00 PM.
